The Village of Canajoharie is a small community nestled along the Mohawk River in Montgomery County in the Mohawk Valley Region of Upstate New York. Canajoharie, or "Canjo" for short, has had many iterations, from a canal town during the days of the Erie Canal to the home of industries such as Beech-Nut and Lifesavers. The area is now entering a period of redevelopment. Storied locations such as Wagner Square are named for inventors like Webster Wagner who invented the first sleeping car for trains. Other famous names associated with the Village include Susan B. Anthony who once taught on West Hill and Amelia Earhart whose flights were sponsored by Bartlett Arkell and Beech-Nut.
It is a place long known for military service including Chester Hoke who fought in the Massachusetts 54th Regiment in the Civil War to Medal of Honor recipients Zachariah C. Neahr and Frank Shubert to General Sean MacFarland, commander of the coalition forces during Operation Inherent Resolve.
Canajoharie was named the Mohawk Valley Region's first Pro-Housing Community in February of 2024. We are also a certified Clean Energy Community under NYSERDA and are working toward a Climate Smart Community designation with the NYS DEC. The Village is a NYS Opportunity Zone and a Potential Environmental Justice Area. Our history, natural resources and shovel-ready sites set us apart for new development.
In looking toward the next era of Canajoharie, we are driven to preserve history and support the families and individuals who have spurred innovation. Hope for the future is one of our greatest tools for reinvention, and when the people of Canajoharie put their minds to it, they have changed the world.
